• Life in Poland was likely hard for Joseph given his father's early death (when he was 2) and the family's situation as landless farmers. This probably compelled him to try his luck in America.
• Magda's family was centered in Kuszewo, which was a regional government center set up by the Prussians who had taken control of Western Poland. These centers provided stable (non-farming) jobs in an otherwise improverished and rural area.
